2016 Summer Summary

It’s been a busy summer and as we head into autumn, it’s worth looking back at some of the most interesting and important developments surrounding Wi-Fi, cell phones, and general EMR issues.

  • The 2016 Left Forum in New York City featured a program titled Drunk on Wireless: Public Health Consequences of Cell Phone and Wireless Technologies are Begging for Society’s Attention. The program featured Camilla Rees, MBA of Electromagnetic Health.org, public health physician Dr. David Carpenter, Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at University at Albany, Dr. Martin Blank, retired Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University, and Dr. Martin Pall, Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University. Wrapping up the scientific presentations and putting the present public health situation related to electromagnetic fields in historical, philosophical and spiritual perspectives was radio host Duncan Campbell, Esq., of Living Dialogues™. View the presentation here.
  • While much of mainstream media still shy away from tackling the potential risks of wireless technologies head-on, they are beginning to address some of the other hazards associated with our increasing reliance on digital devices. The Washington Post published an article in their Health & Science section, Digital disabilities — text neck, cellphone elbow — are painful and growing. The author begins: As I type these words, there’s nerve-tingling in my ring finger. My neck is fatigued. My forearms ache. Just like everyone else, I spend too much time typing on a keyboard or tapping on a screen. Devices out, heads down, thumbs scrolling. I should know better. As a writer who relies on tech, I’m in the vanguard of the Digital Age’s physical fallout, a canary in the cyber coal mine. “Text neck”? Got it. “Cellphone elbow” or cubital tunnel syndrome? Yep. Tendinitis? Check. For well over a decade, there have been months when I couldn’t type an email. Or pick up a piece of paper, let alone my children. Read the article here.
  • In July, IBE Board Member and EcoNest Architecture founder Paula Baker-Laporte authored an article on the possible health impacts of photovoltaics for Mother Earth News. She began by asking if “photovoltaic installations have negative health impacts?” She answers the question at Mother Earth News.
  • Of course, one of the biggest developments of the summer was the start of the nationwide 5G roll-out. The Los Angeles Times ran an article titled Is 5G technology dangerous? Early data shows a slight increase of tumors in male rats exposed to cellphone radiation. It featured some input by Joel M. Moskowitz, director of the Center for Family and Community Health at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health. You can find the article here.
  • Finally, on September 13th, The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held a hearing to consider the CTIA’s arguments why the preliminary injunction to block the City of Berkeley’s cellphone “right to know” ordinance should be reinstated. The law has been in effect since March. CTIA: The Wireless Association – formerly the Cellular Telephone Industries Association – is the lobbying arm for the wireless industries. The case began when Berkeley City Council passed an ordinance requiring cellphone retailers in Berkeley to provide consumers with information that warns them to keep a minimum safe distance between their bodies and their phones. This prompted a quick and fierce backlash by CTIA and the wireless industry. Demonstrating how high the stakes are, the CTIA case was argued by Ted Olson, a former solicitor general under the George W. Bush administration. Berkeley was represented by former presidential hopeful and rock star Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig. The author of Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace, among other books, similarly repeated his own earlier arguments by saying that all that Berkeley does is to make more plain the existing radiation disclosures that are already mandated by the FCC. It’s too early to say how the court will rule.

Harvard School of MedicineDr. Phillipe Grandjean, a researcher at Harvard School of Public Health, and Dr. Landrigan, of New York’s Mount Sinai, report in their peer-reviewed study published in The Lancet Neurology, that “disorders of neurobehavioral development affect 10–15% of all births.” Their study went on to identify five industrial chemicals that could be reliably classified as developmental neurotoxicants: lead, methylmercury, arsenic, polychlorinated biphenyls, and toluene. ). It also noted 201 chemicals that had been reported to cause injury to the nervous system in adults, mostly in connection with occupational exposures, poisoning incidents, or suicide attempts. California Medical AssociationThe California Medical Association (CMA) has come out in official support of efforts to reevaluate and implement new microwave safety exposure levels associated with wireless communication devices. Their call includes consideration of adverse non-thermal biologic and health effects from non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation used in wireless communications, so as to not cause human or environmental harm based on scientific research.

60 MinutesLumber Liquidators, a large American company, has been accused of selling Chinese-made laminate flooring so laced with formaldehyde that many of their products exceed California health standards  by factors of 10X or more. New York Bans FrackingThe State of New York has banned hydraulic fracturing, citing “significant public health risks” associated with fracking. Acting State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard A. Zucker further stated that there are “the potential risks are too great. In fact, they are not even known.” This is a huge win for human health, and we can only hope that every state in the union soon follows New York's example. Fracking earthquakesEarthquake Frequency Surges in Fracking States: States where hydraulic fracturing is taking place have seen a surge in earthquake activity, raising suspicions that the unconventional drilling method could be to blame, especially the wells where the industry disposes of its wastewater. Oklahoma has recorded nearly 250 small-to-medium earthquakes since January, according to statistics kept by the U.S. Geological Survey. That's close to half of all the magnitude 3 or higher earthquakes recorded this year in the continental United States. To read the complete article, CLICK HERE.

Telstra freaks out millions of customers over EMR:Australia’s largest telecommunications company, Telstra, freaked out its customers yesterday (2 July 2014) when it texted them with a “reminder msg” recommending they visit the Telstra website for information on “electromagnetic energy and tips to reduce exposure”. Their website offered cellphone safety tips recommended by the World Health Organization. To read the entire content of Teslstra's advice to their consumers, CLICK HERE.

Alex Stadtner, BBEC, LEED AP, founder and president of Healthy Building Science, decided to lighten the mood at Healthy Building Science by creating a funny video about what Building Biologists do. What started off as a standard informational video soon turned into something very different, and Alex hopes you enjoy the results.

The creative team that put together the video consists of cinematographers, Chibi Moku, a cartoonist, and a voice actor named Geoffrey Smith. It was hilarious to take part in the collaboration, and as you’ll hear, Alex joined in the fun with his voice-over narration. CLICK HERE to watch the video.

The US Department of the Interior has concluded in a formal letter that "the electromagnetic radiation standards used by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) continue to be based on thermal heating, a criterion now nearly 30 years out of date and inapplicable today." And further pointed out that the FCC is a federal agency with no expertise in health, and its standards do not protect organisms from the adverse effects of exposure to the low-intensity radiation produced by cell phones and cell towers.nFor complete article on this emerging issue, click here.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: Reflections by Dr. L. Christine Oliver and Alison Johnson. Dr. Oliver is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Co-Director of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Alison Johnson is the author/producer/director of books and documentaries on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Of particular interest are Dr. Oliver's observations regarding "miracle cures." InsideClimate News, The Weather Channel, and the Center for Public Integrity recently collaborated on an investigation deep in the heart of South Texas, where new oil and gas wells are appearing seemingly everywhere. The region is called the Eagle Ford Shale and it's the location of the largest energy booms in the world. But it may be a bust for local residents who fear for their health.

In an original documentary short, reporter Jim Morris of the Center for Public Integrity visits the people most affected by the boom, and explains the science why they may be in danger. To watch the documentary, CLICK HERE.

The High Road to a True Smart Grid: The Commonwealth Club of California, a national open forum for the impartial discussion of public issues, will be presenting this program on Tuesday, 28 January 2014, at 11:30 AM. The panelists will describe what they believe it will to take to create a reliable, safe, sustainable electricity grid, with our planetary interests at heart, and how a clean energy economy can be fast tracked through an innovative collaborative financing arrangement between the private and public sectors.

The national smart meter network has been called a colossal waste of taxpayer and ratepayer dollars by critics, who argue that the new meters and networks do not improve energy efficiency, enhance energy management, help balance supply and demand, or facilitate the integration of renewable sources. The panel will clarify technical misunderstandings about smart meters, the entrenched economic models preventing utilities from fully embracing renewable energy, and how the growing smart meter rebellion may herald a transformation in the political economy of energy.

Tom Wheeler, former chief telecom industry lobbyist, now chairs the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).  This is yet another FDA-Monsanto-esque revolving door of corruption, which sidelines the rights and safety of an entire nation. Reuters interviewed one veteran Washington telecom insider, who spoke anonymously: "All of the senators in the Commerce Committee know Tom as a lobbyist who funnels funds to them, not as a stand-up guy from a regulatory agency who is able to take heat."

Belgium recently adopted new cell phone regulations that bar mobile phone models designed for, and marketed to children ages 7 and younger. That’s just the beginning of what these innovative regulations will do. Under Belgium’s new rules, slated to take effect next March, cell phone retailers will be required to disclose phones’ maximum emission levels, known as specific absorption rates, or SAR, at the point of sale. Though SAR values are an imperfect measure of user exposure, they are the only metric available to the public.  Clearly, Belgium respects people’s right to know enough to mandate disclosure of SAR values in stores. How to Protect Ourselves and Children from Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs): IBE board of directors president Larry Gust will be a featured speaker on Friday, 15 November, at this New York City "environmental happening" sponsored by BigAppleParents. He will be joined by Dr. Stephen Sinatra, MD; Camilla Rees, MBA; and Dr. Martin Blank, Ph.D. This three hour event will examine the impact of electromagnetic fields on children's mental health, learning capacity, and genetic material at the metabolic level. CLICK HERE for details, and to register to attend.

We'd like to tell you it isn't so, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FEE) has cleared the way for cellphones and SmartPhones and WiFi enabled tablets and laptops to be used for the duration of approved flights. Previously, passengers needed to turn off all electronics before a plane could take off, and only power them back up again above 10,000 feet. When the plane descended back below 10,000 feet, on approach, devices needed to be shut off again. Perhaps the cruelest irony of the announcement falls under the heading: "Top Things Passengers Should Know about Expanded Use of PEDs on Airplanes". The first line item under that advisory is: Make Safety Your Top Priority.

The river and surrounding areas at risk sit above the Marcellus Shale, where the search for natural gas uses a controversial method known as hydro-fracking. Hydro-fracking involves pumping millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals into horizontally drilled wells to stimulate the release of the gas. The Marcellus Shale gas field stretches diagonally across Pennsylvania to West Virginia. Click here to read the full article.

Your Brain on a Cellphone (Sep. 23, 2013 - Berkeley, California): The first study on the short-term effects of Long Term Evolution (LTE), the fourth generation cell phone technology, has been published online in the peer-reviewed journal, Clinical Neurophysiology.

The resting state brain activity of each participant was measured by magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at two times -- after exposure to LTE microwave radiation, and after a sham exposure. The results demonstrated that LTE exposure affected brain neural activity not only in the closer brain region but also in the remote region, including the left hemisphere of the brain. The study helps explain the underlying neural mechanism for the remote effects of microwave radiation in the brain. Read more by clicking here.

"Hydraulic fracturing introduces cancer risks from the start and into perpetuity. Cancer causing chemicals are associated with all stages of the high-volume hydraulic fracturing process, from the production and use of fracking fluids, to the release of radioactive and other naturally hazardous materials from the shale, to transportation- and drilling-related air pollution, to the disposal of contaminated wastewater. The potential for accidents during the injection and transportation of fracking chemicals concerns us deeply. And, as data from other states clearly demonstrate, the storage, treatment and disposal of the contaminated water can be a source of human exposure to chemical carcinogens and their precursors." ~ Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D., ecologist, author, cancer survivor, Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence, Ithica College.

Watch Dr. Steingraber explain how she and her small community in upstate New York succeeded at banning fracking from their town by employing the "Home Rule".

Take Back Your Power - a groundbreaking documentary: Utility companies are replacing electricity, gas and water meters worldwide with new generation “smart” meters at an unprecedented rate. Take Back Your Power is a crowd-funded, public awareness documentary that investigates the benefits and safety of this ubiquitous “smart” meter program. Using insight from insiders, expert researchers, politicians, doctors, and concerned citizens, environmental steward Josh del Sol takes us on a journey of revelation and discovery, as he questions corporations’ right to tap our private information in the name of “green”.

What you discover will surprise you, unsettle you, and inspire you to challenge the status quo. The film premiered on 5 September 2013, and you can buy it as a streaming video or as a DVD by CLICKING HERE (a percentage of your purchase price helps support IBE).

Your body contains 30,000 to 50,000 more chemicals than your grandparents' bodies do. Filmmaker Penelope Jagessar Chaffer was curious about the chemicals she was exposed to while pregnant: Could they affect her unborn child? So she asked scientist Tyrone Hayes to brief her on one he studied closely: atrazine, a herbicide used on corn. (Hayes, an expert on amphibians, is a critic of atrazine, which displays a disturbing effect on frog development.) Onstage together at TEDWomen, Hayes and Chaffer tell their story. In this explosive follow-up to his Oscar®-nominated film GASLAND, filmmaker Josh Fox uses his trademark dark humor to take a deeper, broader look at the dangers of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil, now occurring on a global level (in 32 countries worldwide).

GASLAND II, which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, shows how the stakes have been raised on all sides in one of the most important environmental issues facing our nation today. The film argues that the gas industry’s portrayal of natural gas as a clean and safe alternative to oil is a myth and that fracked wells inevitably leak over time, contaminating water and air, hurting families, and endangering the earth’s climate with the potent greenhouse gas, methane. In addition the film looks at how the powerful oil and gas industries are in Fox's words "contaminating our democracy." Watch the trailer, here below.

Municipal government officials in Noida, India order the dismantling of over 300 cellphone towers: In the wake of health risk posed by mobile phone towers, the Noida Authority has decided to relocate all such antennas from residential areas of the city. The authority will identify locations in isolated places — far from residential colonies — where they will be relocated. TO Read the full article, CLICK HERE.

Experts: Cellphones pose threat to children’s brains. A panel of scientists that included Dr. Hugh Taylor, a Yale University obstetrician and gynecologist, and Dr. Martin Blank, , a researcher in bioelectromagnetics at Columbia University, found that electromagnetic fields can damage DNA, the genetic material that dictates how cells grow, which in turn damage can cause cancer. Even at the lowest energy levels, from radiation generated by the electricity used to power lightbulbs and televisions, radiation can have or create an adverse biological affect in children. The new documentary film Unacceptable Levels examines the results of the chemical revolution of the 1940s through the eyes of affable filmmaker Ed Brown, a father seeking to understand the world in which he and his wife are raising their children. To create this debut documentary, one man and his camera traveled extensively to find and interview top minds in the fields of science, advocacy, and law. Weaving their testimonies into a compelling narrative, Brown presents us with the story of how the chemical revolution brought us to where we are, and of where, if we’re not vigilant, it may take us. Italy's Supreme Court recently upheld a man's claim that his daily cell phone use caused his brain tumor, and the court went further in their written decision to point out that studies reporting that the link between cell phone use and cancers are inconclusive are invariably funded by the telecommunications industry - an indisputable conflict of interest. The Result? Lindsay Abrams, writing for The Atlantic, turned it into a humorous article, scoffing the cell phone/cancer link. Click here to read her appalling article.

25 January 2013: Currently in Virginia, as in most localities, the electric company can come on to your property without your permission and change your analogue meter to a radiation emitting smart meter. These meters when installed transmit radiation every few seconds all day long. The World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer state that Radio Frequency (RF) electro -magnetic fields (EMF) from non-ionizing radiation-emitting devices such as smart meters are a Class 2-B carcinogen, which means they may cause cancer - the pesticide DDT, leaded gas, and chloroform are also in this category.
